Under the Hood:

The Neo EV bid adieu to the Nano’s two-cylinder engine, manual gearbox, fuel tank, and exhaust system. In their place, a 17kW battery found its home beneath the front seats. To accommodate the extra weight, the front suspension was reinforced, and additional bracing was added beneath the floor, enhancing torsional and bending rigidity. The electric motor, a Tesla-type induction motor, found its place at the rear, propelling the Neo’s rear wheels.

Performance and Handling:

The Neo EV’s performance was a study in gradual acceleration. Induction motors are known for their smooth, progressive speed buildup, contributing to a relaxed driving experience. Activating ‘S’ mode injected a bit of zest, offering increased power output. The Neo EV displayed newfound agility and stability, thanks to an improved suspension setup and a lower center of gravity. The steering was light and ultra-responsive, making it a delight on twisty roads.

Range and Charging:

Real-world range varied between 100-130km, depending on driving habits. A full charge at home cost around Rs 120, significantly reducing running expenses. This could have been a game-changer for those transitioning from bikes to cars.

The Future Possibilities:

Stringent crash test norms marked the end of the road for the Nano and the Neo. However, hope still lingers for Tata to explore a new Nano EV with enhanced safety features. While it may not carry the Rs 1 lakh price tag, Tata could create an affordable EV for the future.
