Delhi, the bustling capital of India, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in the realm of sustainable transportation. In December, Electric Vehicles (EVs) sales in Delhi accounted for a remarkable 19.5% of total vehicle sales, setting a new record and solidifying the city’s position as a frontrunner in the EV market.
Delhi’s Electric Revolution: A 19.5% Share in December
Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot proudly shared this achievement on social media, stating, “Delhi records a massive 19.5% EV sales of the overall vehicles sold in December 2023. It is the HIGHEST ever among any state in India to date.” This surge is a testament to the success of the Delhi EV Policy launched in 2020, aimed at fostering the adoption of electric vehicles.
In 2023 alone, Delhi witnessed a total of 6,57,312 vehicle registrations, with a substantial 73,610 being Electric Vehicles. Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi is steadfast in its commitment to providing a cleaner and greener environment for its citizens.
Policy Continuity and Sustainability Goals
To further boost EV adoption, the Delhi cabinet, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, approved the extension of the existing Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy until December 31, 2023. During this extension period, all incentives, including subsidies, will continue to encourage the transition to electric transportation.
The Delhi EV Policy’s overarching objective is to improve the city’s air quality and establish a robust supply-chain ecosystem for electric vehicles. With a target of 25% of all new vehicle registrations being battery-operated by 2024, the policy aims to make a significant impact on reducing emissions.
Switch Delhi Campaign and Environmental Impact
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s proactive approach includes initiatives like the Switch Delhi campaign, launched in February 2021. This campaign plays a crucial role in spreading awareness about the environmental benefits of using EVs, aligning with the broader goal of making Delhi pollution-free.
The recent surge in Electric Vehicles (EVs) sales during December not only signifies Delhi’s progress but also reflects the positive impact of effective policies and awareness campaigns. As more people opt for green vehicles, the city moves closer to its mission of a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation landscape.
Paving the Way for a Greener Future
Delhi’s achievement in Electric Vehicles (EVs) sales, with a remarkable 19.5% share in December, underscores the success of strategic policies and campaigns. The city stands as a shining example in the journey towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious transportation future.
