The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has achieved a remarkable milestone by approving IS17017 (Part 2/Sec 7): 2023, an indigenous AC and DC combined charging connector standard for light electric vehicles (LEVs). Developed in India, this groundbreaking standard is the world’s first of its kind, marking a significant shift in the EV ecosystem.
The New Benchmark for LEVs
IS17017 sets the stage for a standardized AC and DC combined charging system, offering an innovative solution for light electric vehicles. This achievement creates a global benchmark that can revolutionize the way EVs are charged, making it a win-win for vehicle owners, manufacturers, and charging point operators.
Empowering OEMs
Indian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) now have the freedom to move away from exclusive reliance on international standards. Given that over 75% of new vehicles in India are two- or three-wheelers, this standard’s impact on the market is substantial. The collaboration between government bodies and private sector OEMs played a vital role in this development, according to BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog.
A Unique Global Innovation
This standard is a unique global innovation, emphasizing the potential for electric mobility. It allows both AC (slow) and DC (fast) charging from the same service point or station. This versatility is crucial for the widespread adoption of electric mobility not just in India but globally.
A Collaborative Effort
NITI Aayog, the Department of Science and Technology, ARAI, EV manufacturers, and the Bureau of Indian Standards worked together to create this national standard. The goal was to build an open ecosystem that accelerates EV adoption on a global scale.
Addressing Critical Gaps
One of the standard’s primary achievements is addressing the gap in the market for a standardized connector for combined AC and DC charging systems for light electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and microcars. This unified approach creates a more efficient and cost-effective infrastructure for all types of charging, fast or slow. Users no longer need to carry bulky chargers, as an interoperable network for both fast and slow charging becomes a reality.
Global Recognition
Swapnil Jain, Founder of Ather Energy, sees this as a significant leap forward for India in the global arena of EV technology. The Indian EV charging standard holds the potential to become a worldwide solution, positioning India as a leading provider of technology-based solutions in the EV-automobile sector.
The BIS approval of the indigenous charging standards marks a pivotal moment in the electric vehicle industry. India is not only adopting cleaner and more efficient EV charging but is also setting the global standard for others to follow. This open ecosystem promises a future where electric mobility is more accessible and convenient for everyone.
